To see any updates, or to validate a page etc, another full request is made, and the new response comprises a different version of the page. All of it. It's Request... wait. Request... wait. With Asynchronous calls, an agent (xmlhttprequest) is used to fire requests for small amounts of information etc in response to user actions on the page. The requests are made behind the scenes, and do not require a full page postback. Javascript is used to provide the event handler that will cause the request to be made, and is usually used to process the resulting response (updating a part of the page perhaps). In the meantime, the user has full access to the page and can continue to do what they were doing, such as completing a form, watching stock prices, composing email or whatever.
