Roughly, you have to be contributing for a while. You whole year and write about 40 articles plus some blogs, forums replies and so on.

Mindcracker MVP Award (that is different than Microsoft MVP award) is based on the total contributions and mostly based on articles, blogs, and feedback/ideas/suggestions on the site. Since forums are being cashed in ($$$), so forums do not count much.
However, we are going to nominate Forums users to Microsoft but Microsoft also looks for articles, blogs etc as well. Read this blog about Microsoft MVP.
How to get an MVP Award? by Mahesh Chand On Jul 30, 2007
Criteria for Microsoft INDIA MVP seems harder and they need a lot of articles, blogs and lot of contributions.
Hope this answers your questions.
