I am doing a brown bag lunching session. I trying to come up with a common model of how to gather software engineering/developing requirements

The Sales Department has made a request to create a report to view sales history. You are assigned to gather the technical and functional specifications. How would you gather the specifications, what questions would you ask, how would you organize the project?

What is MOM?

1. How would you gather the specifications?
Answer: Let them speak about their process. You try to listen & document those things roughly. So latter that will help you to organize in MOM document. Clients also providing requirement specific documents.

2. What questions would you ask ?
Answer: Whichever points of their process your are not getting.

3. How would you organize the project?
Answer: First prepare proper flowchart as per their document / requirement specific document / MOM. So that will help your architect team to design software architecture. Then start development as per design.

So lets say the Company is Amazon. We want to create a report to View Sales History.

In the gathering the Functional Requirement State,

1. How would you gather the specifications?
2.What questions would you ask ?
3. How would you organize the project?

Hi David as per my understanding & experience software specifications is divided into 2 parts:
(01.) Functional Requirement
This requirements client gives or you are gathering information from your client. What functionality actually they want means basic working style of their sales department. How they are maintain day to day activity & what additionally they want to improve their working culture.

(02.) Software Requirement
This requirement decided by development team as per functional requirement. Means what technologies are require to fulfill their requirements. What will be architecture & structure of the software.
