GoLang is created by Google. It is a compiled, statically typed language in the tradition of Algol and C, with garbage collection, limited structural typing, memory safety features and CSP-style concurrent programming features added. The compiler and other language tools originally developed by Google are all free and open source. Simplicity or Keeping Life Simple : Go is good for any software project with any complexity - it is extremely “simple” (this is a controversial word amongst programmers). But really it is very simple, while writing go code you feel like you are writing some practical code. Networking: Go is unusually good for writing networking applications - writing highly scalable TCP or HTTP server in Go is a blast, inventing your own protocols has mostly to do with “protocol” but never Go - your server side work gets done fast which is really bad because then you would need to focus on real things that matter to you. (hint: sarcasm ;)) Systems : Go is a decent (with reservations) choice when it comes to writing system code but certainly not the best - probably a great choice there would be C or Rust. (Note C++ is absent in my ors). It has a way to integrate C code that goes OK . You can make direct system calls for example, there’s pointers in Go and theres unsafe domain that allows you to do things close to bare metal so so. Actually in Go’s own authors terms - the project originated for system programming, that is outlined here - (Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)) . Right now projects such as Docker, Etcd, Kubernetes, Timeseries databases like InfluxDB, Prometheus etc. use golang which are pretty awesome to use. In my mind perhaps Go is more of an Applications written that are closer to Systems side than other languages do. Rust just is more closer to system than Go is. Concurrency : Go is an excellent choice for concurrency - channels and goroutines make life extremely simple to understand, Gos concurrency model takes from Communicating sequential processes - Wikipedia and bunch of other things like this - (Share Memory By Communicating).
