Global.asax file is optional in Asp.Net MVC ?

We know Global.asax file is optional in Asp.Net Applications. But in Asp.Net MVC(4) application getting error without Global.asax .

Please explain what is the functionality of Global.asax file in Asp.Net MVC Application.

Global.asax is ASP.NET application file, is an optional file that contains code for responding to application-level and session-level events raised by ASP.NET or by HTTP modules.
If you do not define the file, the ASP.NET page framework assumes that you have not defined any application or session event handlers.
