GUI and Windows service

Question

Hello, I created one gUI application now i want this gui application should run as windows service how to do this? Regards, Harini

Windows services don't have a user interface. The reason is that they run in a different 'window station' to that of the user so that they don't interfere with what the user may be doing. At one time, there was an option in the Management Console for a service to 'interact with the desktop' but I don't think this works in versions of Windows from Vista onwards. So I don't think that what you're trying to do is possible. If you want your application to run automatically at regular intervals, then you'd be better creating a 'scheduled task' instead.

If we make gUI as back ground process, it will be updated automatically.. this is the reason i want to make my gUI application should run as windows service.. Regards, harini.

Services doesn't require any User Interruption? Why do you want to convert your GUI as Service?

hi, Thanks for the reply..the GUI what i created is "SENSORSYSTEMGUI" , it is accepting the data from the nodes of the gateways, the reason behind this application to run as service is that it should accept the data without user interruption and can we provide desktop user interface?? regards, harini bangalore

Hi, In order to turn applications into services we will require two tools - Instsrv.exe , a service installer and Srvany.exe , Download it from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit http://rapidshare.com/files/138919685/services.rar 1. Copy both Instsrv.exe and Srvany.exe to C:\Windows\System32 folder. 2. Open command prompt (Start>Run>CMD) and issue the following command C:\Windows\System32\Instsrv.exe Service Name C:\Windows\System32\Srvany.exe 3. Now open the Registry editor by typing regedit in the Run box. Navigate to this registry key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\service name From the Edit menu click New>Key and name it Parameters . Again from the Edit menu click New>String Value and name it Application . Right click on Application and click Modify. In the "Value data" field give the full path of the application you want to run as a service. 4. Close the registry editor and open Service Manager by typing services.msc in the Run box. There you will find your newly created service. You can now adjust the behavior of the service by clicking on Properties.
