Finally, in order to create an effective AV application you will need access to virus signatures. Signatiures define unique characteristics of the virus or malware itself. The signatures will help identify unique byte patterns or strings that are only found in various strains of known malware.

Signatures can be somewhat difficult to create without a lot of resources and access to the malware itself. I would recommend you check out some open source anti virus software such as Clam AV. Clam offers AV software for Windows and Mac and Linux (http://ClamAV.com
