If the requirement is just for referring the document, you may use out of box "Like" feature.

I have created a button for refer document.
When user refer a document, refer count should increase in sharepoint list.

You can add the below code on your list page using CEWP to display the number of items in the list via alert pop-up. You can modify the below code based upon your requirement.

Give a common class to newly created buttton. ie. "btnClass"

Create a method that bind the click events like
function BindDefaultEvents()
{
$('.btnClass').on('click',function(){
// Your count logic here
});
}
And now call this BindDefaultEvent funtion once you have generated the button. That will bind this click event to the newly created button.
