I can't find what I should click on to enable notification of replies... 'subscribing' to the thread, as they call it.
It can be done?

Maybe the moderator will move it over there.
I looked in 'my account' and it showed a 'profile' and a box there 'notify when an answer is accepted' was checked. I guess that is it. When that box is checked we get notified of all answers to all threads we've participated in, maybe.
And it seems to be the default.
And, unfortunately, it seems to send one ALL the answers to ANY thread that gets an answer.
So this is really a mailing list rather than a forum.
And I'm going to have to uncheck that box, too much email.
By 'forum' I mean something like, for instance, the 'afterdawn' forum (http://forums.afterdawn.com/).
A much better format, I'm inclined to think. And freely available, or something very similar, there's phpbb, for instance, and Yabb for another.
But, I suppose, the creators of this list have much work and time invested in this software and would be most reluctant to give it up: plus there'd be even more work and effort porting all these existing questions and answers to another format, such as phpbb, if it were even possible, which I guess isn't for sure.
:)

First, go to the home page. At the upper left click on "My Account". You will then get a My Account menu at the left. You will see "My Account" in other places but they are not all the same. Explore the "My Account"; I am not sure where the subscription option is, if it is anywhere.

Please explain bit more.
as i understood you have to maintain the users information who are involved in the thread and with in notify for the flag for enable notification of replies. As a new post is posted in the thread check from your table where you maintained info of user. Filter for only notification enabled users and
send the mails.
Hope it helps you.
