If you don’t want to use office apps for SharePoint, you may use LEADTOOLS DocumentViewer toolkit which contains controls and classes for loading, displaying and converting document files. You can try the online demo for the viewer using this link:

The code to load and display a file looks like this:
var url = "https://ServerIpAddres/Sample.doc";
var pts = null;
// Call the "LoadFromUri" and pass success and failure callbacks to the promise
lt.Documents.DocumentFactory.loadFromUri(url, null).done(function (document) {
// Set the document in the viewer
_this.documentViewer.setDocument(document);
var ImageViewer = _this.documentViewer.view.imageViewer;

This will open word documents in WOPIFrame.
