There are lot's of extensions to work on and these are depending of market value also. Every platform has its positive points and negative points always. But the main thing is
"which type of applications you like most? like visual development or textual development etc".
Think about above point. If you like visual development then you can chose C#.Net, VB.Net or any other Microsoft Standard Technologies. But if you like to work on textual then you can choose php, coldfusion, java like platforms. (output will be visual in all).

each of those technologies has its + and -,
so my suggestions, to determine which technology to be used, we need to look at the demands and requirement of the users.
for example:
1. Open Source, Low Cost, stable then go ahead with php.
2. Rapid Development, Need Support, Fully Documentation, Nice IDE, then go to .Net.
3. Multi platform, then choose java.
