If you put the label in an UpdatePanel, then only that will get updated on a post-back, not the whole page.

Although the above approach worked fine when I tried it, it's since occurred to me that you could do it without using Session state at all. All you need to do is to parse what the Label is already showing and add a second to it on each Tick event of the Timer:

if (!IsPostBack)

Label1.Text = "00:00:00";
Timer1.Interval = 1000;
Timer1.Enabled = true;
}
}

protected void Timer1_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string[] items = Label1.Text.Split(':');
int hours = int.Parse(items[0]);
int mins = int.Parse(items[1]);
int secs = int.Parse(items[2]);
secs++;
if (secs == 60)
{
mins++;
secs = 0;
if (mins == 60)
{
hours++;
mins = 0;
if (hours == 24) hours = 0;
}
}
Label1.Text = String.Format("{0:D2}:{1:D2}:{2:D2}", hours, mins, secs);
}

Assuming you're using.NET 4.0 or later, add the following controls to the page:

1. A ScriptManager

2. An AJAX Timer (must be added after #1)

3. A Label to display the elapsed time.

Double click on the Timer control in design mode to create a skeleton Tick handler.

Now add the following code:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)
{
Label1.Text = "00:00:00";
Session["StartTime"] = DateTime.Now;
Timer1.Interval = 1000;
Timer1.Enabled = true;
}
}

protected void Timer1_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
DateTime start = (DateTime)Session["StartTime"];
TimeSpan interval = DateTime.Now - start;
Label1.Text = interval.ToString(@"hh\:mm\:ss");
}
