Hello What is DataTable ? Datatable is basically a collection of rows and columns and , combined form is called DataTable When to Use DataTable ? When we want to create virtual table that represent data in row-column format at that time datatable is used "Dataset" holds so many datatable , in short dataset is collection of datatable Answer of your question : Return type of DataTable should be always DataTable [Obviously , no wonder] How to do [small example] : public DataTable GetMyDetail() { // Creating datatable DataTable datatable = new DataTable(); datatable.Clear(); // Creating column inside datatable datatable.Columns.Add( "FirstName" ); datatable.Columns.Add( "LastName" ); // For inserting data inside dt by creating datarow DataRow dr = datatable.NewRow(); dr[ "FirstName" ] = "Manav" ; dr[ "LastName" ] = "Pandya" ; datatable.Rows.Add(dr); return datatable; } Now if i want to use result of data table than do like : DataTable newDT = new DataTable(); newDT = GetMyDetail(); Put debug point and execute it , u will get to know that my record is stored in newDT object of datatable I hope you got my point Thanks

Hi, DataTable will be the return type. Lets understand it with an example. Here I am retrieving all employee in Datatable. public DataTable GetEmployee() { try { DataTable dt = new DataTable(); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(); cmd.Connection = con; cmd.CommandText = "Usp_GetAllEmployee" ; cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; con.Open(); SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd); DataSet ds = new DataSet(); da.Fill(ds); dt = ds.Tables[0]; con.Close(); return dt; } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } } Hope it helps.
