Well, HTTP is a stateless protocol and so ASP.NET is essentially stateless as well. Even if some of it is done automatically for you, special arrangements need to be made to preserve the state of your web pages between round-trips to the server using devices such as View state, Session state or Application state.

Functional programming languages (such as F# and Haskell) also avoid shared state as much as possible. This makes them better suited to multithreaded and concurrent programming where the difficulty for imperative languages (such as C# and C++) is to synchronize changes in shared state between threads or processors. Hence the renewed interest in the functional paradigm in recent years as programming language designers look for ways to harness the full power of multi-core processors.
