Meaning of Tier in Three Tier Architecture

The technical meaning of the term "Tier" is like separate location.

Let us think that we are developing an applciation.

We know that we'll be having servers at different locations.

In general we will place all the application related things like business or database things will be at one physical server.

Means within one server we are eunning all.

Now our database server might be in another physical location.

Means we are using another tier.

Now it becomes 2-tier.

Based on the applications using tiers existance we will give the count as like.. 1-Tier, 2-Tier, 3-Tier.
