Navigating tables inside DataSet

OK, correct me if I understood it worng. There is datagrid. There is a column in this datagrid populated with tablenames. When user click on the tablename you have to find this very table in the dataset. You can do it like this: myDataSet.Tables['myTable']. You don't need index to access the table. If you still need the index for any other reason, just browse the DataSet Tables collection and look for an index of the specific table. Somesing like: for (int i = 0; i < myDataSet.Tables.Count; i++) { DataTable myTable = myDataSet.Tables[i]; string myTableName = myTable.TableName; if (myTableName.Equals(text1.text)) mytableIndex = i; } (I just typed it here without any testing)

I apologize. The user can see the different tables that have records that match the search criteria. The user then decides which one he would like to look at. He clicks on a table name. Now, how can I programatically access the name of the table that the user clicked on? There is a long list of names of tables, and the program needs to have a string value of the name of the one that is picked by the user. So far I have been unable to find a method or property combination that allows me to see the 'current table' (akin to current row or current cell). How else might I go about accessing the chosen table name?

The user enteres criteria into textboxes. The SQL statement is built depending on what fields the user chose to search. Then the dataset is used as the vessel to return all records in the database (no matter what table they are in) that match the criteria. After the search is done, the datagrid displays a list of tables, in which there are record(s) that match the criteria. The user can then click a table name and the matched data is displayed. I need to know how to find out which table the user clicked on.

And how do you display tables without knowing what you are showing?

Unfortunately, my issue deals with the attempt to find which index of tables to select. I can't use a textbox to input the table name. Sorry if my explanation was bad. I need to find a way to tell which table the user clicked on, when they are given the option to click on several different tables inside the same dataset. I need to extract the table name from the user's action ( i.e. clicking on a table inside the datagrid ). Is there a method that can tell what index (regarding the table collection inside the dataset) the user clicked on at runtime? I haven't been able to figure this one out.

You can use the DataSet.Tables collection. Navigation in the collection is easy. You just have to supply the index (string or integer). The code snippet assumes that you have a textbox named textBox1 which contains the name of the table you want to search in the DataSet ds. Remember that it is possible that tbl is NULL if there is no such table in the dataset DataTable tbl = ds.Tables[textBox1.Text]; // Do whatever you want with your table here, try block does not hurt....
