Remember Open source doesnt mean free...it can even be paid, but the source code is available for you.

Good useful examples of open source software are found on sourceforge, github and codeplex. One popular example which I have used often is the WPF Toolkit and Silverlight Toolkit. Though I have not seen the source code, I used them as a consumer and they have practically been very very useful for me.

No! .NET is not an open-source platform. .NET is actually nothing but a name. It is not a software. .NET is a platform that consists of programming languages, APIs, libraries and so on.
