Permissions issue

I am the administrator for the whole system (network) and I have done something by accident (in active directory) which is preventing all users on one of the computers on the network (webdev computer) from accessing it's own C drive (access denied).

Furthermore, when I am logged into the Windows server 2008 as "Administrator", I look under "Network" and click into the "webdev" section. I see 3 folders ("program files", "users" and "win7"). I am able to access the "program files" and "users" folders, but NOT the "win7" folder. (error code 0x80070005 Access is denied).

What I think happened is that the "owner" of the "win7" folder within the WebDev C drive was changed by accident (therefore affecting access to the whole C drive for any user on the WebDev computer). However, when I try and change the "owner", it will not allow me to (it says, "you do not have permission to view or edit this objects permission settings").

Any help would be appreciated.

please launch "gpedit.msc" in "Start"->"Run", locate to Computer configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/User Rights Assignments, in the left pane file the key "Access this computer from the network". Make sure that the account you are using to access the Windows XP computer or its group is in the list. Also make sure that it is not in the list in the key "Deny access to this computer from the network".

Perhaps your company needs to pay an expert to help you with this. It is better to ensure you have it fixed properly. Then you need to get a relevant book and read it.

I cannot change the permissions on the folder when logged in as Administrator on the Server, OR on the WebDev machine. It says, "can't open access control editor, access is denied", when trying to change the "owner". I am logged in as DOMAINNAME\administrator

Then you are not logged into the system as an Administrator. Are you trying to do this across the network from a different system?

Thanks for the reply. However, I cannot take "ownership", because when I try to change ownership, it tells me that I do not have permission to do so.

I hope you have the problem solved by now.

I am not the most experienced person for this but you should be able to take ownership. It is relatively normal for Windows security to tell an Administrator that has all access to the system that they don't have access to something becuase they are not the owner. The way to get around that is to take ownership.
