Common apps development is the latest trend in mobile development. PhoneGap is providing you the ultimate solution but it comes with some charges. jQuery mobile is playing very important role. And it would be not fine, if I miss HTML5 and CSS3. HTML5 has made the life easier for developers developing common platform apps.
MVC 4, is also a good architect pattern, and market has a huge demand of it. :)
All the best!!!
