What can be the problem if I have installed sql server 2008 but I m not able to make database in visual studio 2010.

A default installation of SQL Server 2008 Express will have Windows Authentication, so simple click the drop down for the server name and hopefully you will find just one entry there for your local SQL Server Enter a name for your new database and press OK Once done, in Server Explorer you should have a new node under 'Data Connections' with the name of you SQL Server followed by the name of your new database.
