Regarding the use of Ajax with API

Hi C#Corner,

Right now am learning the web api in .net. i have observed to call any api we are using jquery and ajax. can we make a call to Api using only jquery.

I would like to know exactly the purpose of the Ajax using in api , .net .

We can call web api using

*) Httpwebclient
*) Httpwebrequest

we all know every api had adress(url) method type,body

example code for calling POST method

var content = new StringContent(jsonObject.ToString(), Encoding.UTF8, "application/json");
var result = client.PostAsync(url, content).Result;

example code for GET method

HttpClient client = new HttpClient();
HttpResponseMessage response = await client.GetAsync("http://www.contoso.com/");
response.EnsureSuccessStatusCode();
string responseBody = await response.Content.ReadAsStringAsync();

*)Even using Ajax also we can call web api

AJAX is a technique for creating fast and dynamic web pages. AJAX allows web pages to be updated asynchronously by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes. This means that it is possible to update parts of a web page, without reloading the whole page.

Ajax is not using in API. Ajax is used to make API calls.

With Ajax, web applications can send and retrieve data from a server asynchronously without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page.

Before you deep dive into coding, I would suggest you to understand each terminologies you used so you will understand what are their roles and use, and ultimately understand how you would connect each of these to each other.

jQuery is a JavaScript library designed to simplify HTML DOM tree traversal and manipulation, as well as event handling, CSS animation, and Ajax. The jQuery library has a full suite of Ajax capabilities. The functions and methods therein allow us to load data from the server without a browser page refresh.

Web API is used to serve data from your server/database so other clients that supprts HTTP can access to it. Clients includes: Browsers, Mobile and Desktop apps.

Now, when you want to build a dynamic web application that requires pulling and pushing data to your database, then you might need to utilize AJAX to perform that. Your browser/html doesn't have direct access to your data which is hosted on the server, and in order to communicate with your data from the server, you need to make use of AJAX to hit your Web API endpoints and perform some action based on your needs.

Now, to answer your question, you cannot use jQuery alone to access your Web API. You would need jQuery AJAX to communicate with your Web API.
