You should really use textBox1.Text.Length to get the length of the string from a textbox. Anything else is just a lot of overhead an inefficient. However... MatchCollection m = Regex.Matches(textBox1.Text,"."); Console.WriteLine(m.Count.ToString()); This will solve your problem for you using Regex

The point is to use a RegularExpressionValidator, and to set the ValidationExpression-property properly. As I said, \w{9}$ works up to 9 characters, but \w{10}$ does not work.

How are you trying to validate it, just the length as below? string sText = txtBox.Value; int iLen = sText.Length; or the contents of the box i.e. Looking for non-word characters?
