SMTP mail sending failure ?

my question is that, i am sending email from my web app using smtp. but the problem is that, when i am sending email to any user and if that email sending failed and return back to my inbox so how would i know in my program that this email was not send .

is it necessary to include cradentials ? i mean with this its works very well ..
