if you have a double then float can be assigned to it, because larger values can hold smaller ones, but you can't assign a double to float because float can't hold double, there will be some data loss,

so, larger datatype can hold smaller ones, and the compiler doesn't warn you, this is called implicit conversion, but assigning a larger data type to a smaller one cause data loss, so compiler warns you and you have to explicitly do it , as if you are okay with the conversion and data loss, so it is called as user-defined conversion.

double x=123.345;
int y= (int)x; // user defined , no role of compiler
