WEB api in intensive load business applications

I am in process of implementing a windows application that should consume services. However, i am wondering about the capabilties of the HTTP protocol to handle such complex operation and massive data transfer.

What be the correct choice and how to overcome and avoid any bottlenecks if they exists?
