Generics allow you to delay the specification of the data type of programming elements in a class or a method, until it is actually used in the program. In other words, generics allow you to write a class or method that can work with any data type.

Generics allow you to define type-safe classes without compromising type safety, performance, or productivity.
When using value types, you have to box them in order to store them, and unbox the value types when using them.
Boxing and unboxing decreases performance significantly.
Generics are Type safe- Compiler lets you cast anything to and from Object.
You can use generics in classes and in structs.

Benefits:
Because the generic code does not force the boxing and unboxing of value types, or the down casting of reference types, performance is greatly improved.
You will get compile time errors instead of run time errors.
You know the data type of variable and generic does not allow other type value added resulting in type safety.
