What are the usages of Lists ib C#?

Lists are used to create ordered collections whose capacity can increase (or reduce) dynamically.

In the .NET type, List, this is achieved by starting with a default capacity of 4 and then doubling this to accomodate new elements as needed.

Although arrays are also enumerable collections, their size cannot be changed once they have been created.

Here's a simple example which illustrates how lists work:

List list = new List{'A', 'B', 'C', 'D'};

Console.WriteLine(list.Capacity); // 4

// add another element

list.Add('E');

Console.WriteLine(list.Capacity); // now 8

// remove 2nd element

list.RemoveAt(1);

// note that removing elements doesn't change capacity

Console.WriteLine(list.Capacity); // still 8

// check if list contains 'D'

Console.WriteLine(list.Contains('D')); // True

// iterate through and print out remaining elements

foreach(char c in list) Console.Write("{0} ", c);

Console.ReadKey();
