What DB can I use for a end user application?

Hi there, I have a question about end user applications. Until now I was only working in MsSQL server environments and had no problems with Databases and so on. But I am about to start a project that will be an application a user will install on his pc at home. Ususaly there is no MsSQL server... ;) But I need some kind of database support. What are you guys using in that case? My requirement are: - easy to install (for the end user), best would be in the setup project - must be able to handle SQL statements Thanx S.

ok, that helped me a lot. I guess I'll go with the MSDE. Seems to be the best. And this part here from the Microsoft website: MSDE 2000 redistribution rights are included in the end-user license agreement (EULA) for Visual Studio .NET Architect, Developer, and Professional Editions for the purpose of developing applications in Visual Studio that are fully compatible with SQL Server 2000. You will need client access licenses (CALs) or processor licenses to deploy MSDE 2000 applications that access SQL Server back-end data and resources. takes care of the redistribution license problem. sorry...I'll be more specific..Yes, you can run SQL statements on an Access DB (it uses Jet-SQL, so there are minor differences between that and T-SQL. And yes, if you have a license fo SQL2K..you're golden with MSDE...

access, can I run SQL statements on a access dB? MSDE, well yeah, the licenscing part... damn. I have to check that before. Assuming I have a SQL2k version, am I allowed to deploy the MSDE with my application? any other suggestions? so far, thanx! S.

You may want to look at the MSDE (Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine). It allows you to run SQL on a client machine without all the nice little user inferfaces like Enterprise Manager, but still gives you all the SQL functionality. The licenscing is fairly liberal...as long as you once knew someone who had a regular copy of SQL2k...you're covered (okay, maybe not that liberal). We are using that as the client database for a distributed app we're working on now. -James
