what is assembly in SQL Server?

Assembly is just a class library (.dll) written in .NET (in C# or any other compliant language). You register it with SQL Server and you will be to call functions in that dll in SQL Server.

So you get power of .NET languages (like C#) to implement functions which are not natively available in SQL Server and extend the SQL Server capabilities.
