I'm not sure about Silverlight as there have been conflicting signals coming out of Microsoft about it. Good as it is, it's very complex and only runs on Windows and Mac OS though the Mono project's Moonlight has the other platforms covered. I wouldn't be surprised if, in the not too distant future, it didn't take a back seat to some HTML5 based technology which Microsoft are currently incubating though where that would leave Windows Phone 7 development I don't know. Azure is a better long term bet as Microsoft certainly needs a foot-hold here from which to counter the forthcoming Google Chrome OS for 'thin client' cloud-based computing.

I don't know enough about SharePoint or Azure to provide advice about them. In addition to Silverlight, there are related areas that are vast and worth learning, such as communication (WCF) and database. Also, employers will likely appreciate an ability to do analysis and design. There is a lot to learn about that.

The phrase or term "cutting-edge" is like the phrase or term " trail-blazer ". A trail-blazer makes trails; cuts plants and decides where the trail should be. Trails also need to be fortified so the ground does not slip and such, but a trail-blazer would probably leave that for others to do. In a knife, the cutting-edge is the part that cuts; it does the real work and everything else has secondary importance. I think cutting-edge is supposed to mean essentailly the same thing as trail-blazer but I think it is not the best term. I think people say cutting-edge because it sounds cool. Another way to look at cutting-edge is to say that the cutting-edge is the first part of the knife that starts the cut.

Well, you're said to be at the 'cutting edge' of some field of activity if you're involved in the latest developments in that field. Similarly, cutting edge technologies are those which make use of the latest developments in a particular field. In other words they feature the most advanced techniques and/or equipment which is available in that field. For example, Intel and AMD work at the cutting edge of semiconductor manufacture.

I t would be super huge news if Mono for iPhone or for Android were to be dropped. For the moment this is what most of the Monodroid developers are saying. Yes, the news is very quiet at the moment, but the feeling is that we will get some news soon. It is unlikely this is anything more than a temporary setback.

It appears that AttachMate have shut down Mono ( http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/is-mono-dead-is-novell-dying/8821 ). So, I'd avoid two cutting-edge technologies - Mono for iPhone and Android - until we know for sure what's happening. A great pity if the reports are correct :(

Many people consider Windows Forms to be old technology, but Windows Forms work the way that Windows works more than WPF and Silverlight. So until Microsoft develops a new operating system, Windows Forms will continue to be current. Microsoft however is not likely to abandon Silverlight too quickly. That however is fundamental to the definition of cutting-edge technologies; when we blaze a trail or follow behind a trailblazer, we might be taken someplace we don't want to go. That is the risk of cutting-edge technologies.

I agree. Azure seems to have better future than Silverlight. Silverlight is still shaky.

thanks Mahesh... Please reply, which technology I should learn now. Still I'm experimenting with Silverlight but after this which technology I should choose: either SharePoint or Azure (Cloud).
