What is difference betweeb .ToString() and Convert.ToString(

Hello

 

I think there are not so many difference between toString() and convert.toString()

 

But main difference that i have observed is :

 

toString() : Can not allow null values and throws exception

 

convert.toString() : Empty value can be accepted thus exception will not be thrown

Its really a good practice to use Convert.Tostring as it handles null value exception.On the other hand .toString() does throws an exception which we need to handle in the catch block of our C# code.

Convert.ToString() handles null value , while ToString() does not.

Object mObj = null;

String mValue1 = mObj.ToString(); //throws Null reference exception

String mValue2 = Convert.ToString(mObj); //returns NULL

when you convert a value into string you can use .ToString or Convert.Tostring.

 

.Tostring given you null reference exception when value is null where as Convert.Tostring won't give you any exception.

The basic difference between them is “Convert.ToString(variable)” handles NULL values even if variable value become null but “variable.ToString()” will not handle NULL values it will throw a NULL reference exception error. So as a good coding practice using “convert” is always safe.
