As it differs from Flash, Silverlight is the "vectoral platform" answer of Microsoft.
While working with Flash it was hard to access data and fetch it.In Silverlight you can access data by using WCF RIA Services.Data Access is made too easy.For creating animations you can use Microsoft's Expression Blend product.Expression Blend's main target is for User Experience(UX) Designers not developers.So developers can have hard times to understand using this product.
Since lots of applications are being migrated to Web,Mobile devices and Clouds,learning Silverlight is crucial for a Fresher.Silverlight is the FUTURE!
