Generic collections are strongly typed, whereas non-generic collections are (unless designed to work with a specific type) weakly typed. This means that the elements are stored as their actual types, rather than as type System.Object. In the case of value type elements (int, double, bool, char etc) this avoids the need for boxing/unboxing which improves performance. It also means that, when retrieving elements (of any type) from the collection, it is not necesssary to cast to the actual type before any useful work can be done.
