A cookie is often used to identify a user. A cookie is a small file that the server embeds on the user's computer. Each time the same computer requests a page with a browser, it will send the cookie too.

Session Cookies are small bits of information that a web site can store on your computer. These little bits of information cannot be viruses or harmful programs. Many cookies are used to tell a web site when you visited their site last, or if you are shopping online, it holds your shopping cart number so that it can keep track of any items you want to buy.
