What is the difference between Debug and Release Build Mode in Visual Studio?

in general they are two separate configurations, each with its own settings. By default, Debug includes debug information in the compiled files (allowing easy debugging) while Release usually has optimizations enabled. As far as conditional compilation goes, they each define different symbols that can be checked in your program, but they are language-specific macros

"Debug" and "Release" are just names for predefined project configurations defined by Visual Studio. In terms of functionality, there is no difference between release dll or debug dll. However, there are some difference in terms of following:

Debug Mode:

- Less optimized code
- Some additional instructions are added to enable the developer to set a breakpoint on every source code line.
- More memory is used by the source code at runtime.
- Scripts & images downloaded by webresource.axd are not cached.
- It has big size, and runs slower.

Release Mode:

- More optimized code
- Some additional instructions are removed and developer can’t set a breakpoint on every source code line.
- Less memory is used by the source code at runtime.
- Scripts & images downloaded by webresource.axd are cached.
- It has small size, and runs fast.
