What is the proper way to handel multiple datagrids in a tabcontrol so taht cells leave edit mode when the tabs are changed?

I've never tried this, however, couldn't you tie into the "LostFocus" event for the datagrid and in this event simply set SelectedItems to null?  All the datagrids I've used up to this point are read only so I'm assuming that clearing the selection will also clear the edit mode. I could be totally wrong though so this is probably not the "proper way" your looking for :) Nevertheless I hope it helps!
