When should I host my service in a Windows service?

I think another reason to use a service is when you need something to be done automatically without user intervention. So you need to write the service so that the user does not need to even think about it; if there are errors, you need to make it so that it can do as much as possible automatically.

When there is a large chunk of operation like for an example you have lakhs of records need to be picked from database and converted to excel or pdf. You cannot let this huge task run on UI thread. Instead advice you to run this task on a background thread something like windows service.
