It depends on your passion. Which one you love more? make that your career. Both are having god scope in the market. If you are not sure what kind of job an ML/BD guy doing, read below. Suppose I want to make an App like FaceApp - Takes your pic, predicts your aged pic[ It is done by a supervised ML algorithm using thousands/millions of training images] Step 1 : Collect all required images -> Move to HDFS -> Scale/Align/Saturate This will be done by a Big Data developer Step 2 : Apply ML on the processed data This part is for ML engineer. From job perspective : As far as I have seen the job requirements, Big Data openings are more, many companies are transitioning to Big Data pool. But same time people with ML skills are less(which makes high demand for the suitable ones) From the technology perspective : Big data : Required advanced programming skills on Java/Scala. Tools knowledge Hive, Pig, Oozie, Sqoop Streaming tools Spark, Storm, Kafka(messaging platform) Machine Learning : Should be good in Mathematics/Statistics Algorithms for Supervised and Unsupervised learning. Good to know Python/R
