Very basic example of this design pattern wiould be logging data in some application. Let's assume that you want to log the application method calls while users are working on the application. 

So the code archtecture would be to have class whose only job is to write the data provided to it. While you are loggin these data, it is quite possible that you will want to write from more than one classes and normally you would start creating an object of logger class and  will write that data. But this design pattern makes it possible to get rid of creating objects in different classes. Instead of creating objects at different places to write data, you can create single static instance of the logger class and it can be used to write a data to file or DB.
