Our Linux development team is dedicated to enhancing and maintaining the full stack of Linux, including the kernel, device drivers, libraries, tools, compilers, debuggers, virtualization (KVM), and test automation & CI/CD. We collaborate closely with IBM's international development teams, open-source communities, and Linux distribution partners (Red Hat, SUSE, Canonical). Our focus lies in supporting the IBM Z / LinuxONE architecture, enabling new processor instructions, I/O attachments, and cryptographic accelerators crucial for IBM's commercial solutions in Cloud, Analytics, and AI.
What You Will Do
- Focus on exploiting the unique AI hardware acceleration features of the IBM Z platform, including low-level code additions to the Linux operating system interacting directly with accelerator hardware.
- Work on enabling standard AI open-source frameworks like PyTorch.
- Validate functionality, handle problem determination, debug, fix bugs, and solve client issues.
- Attend open-source community meetings and engage in client-facing activities such as support and providing lectures at conferences.
- Collaborate closely with open-source communities for upstream integration of your code and with distribution partners (Red Hat, SUSE, Canonical).
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- Proven experience in operating systems development and low-level programming (e.g., C, C++, Assembler).
- Practice in debugging and problem determination.
- More than 3 years of experience with Linux software development.
- Good understanding of machine learning and AI foundations.
- Solid knowledge in debugging tools (e.g., gdb, Valgrind) and problem determination methods.
- Experience with source code repository systems (e.g., git), scripting languages (e.g., Python), containers (docker/podman), and test automation (e.g., Jenkins).
- Highly motivated individual with fluency in English, both verbal and written.
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
- Prior contributions to open-source projects or current open-source maintainer status.
- Linux kernel development experience.
- Knowledge in AI model optimizations and transformer models.
- Skills in IBM Z architecture, Z assembler, and I/O concepts.
- Understanding of Endianness.
