The Studio Engineer is an integral part of the Product Development Team, responsible for modeling exterior Class-A Surfaces for a range of Microsoft products. This role involves collaborating closely with Industrial Designers, Mechanical Engineers, and manufacturing partners to develop world-class products that meet both design and engineering requirements.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Industrial Design (ID) team, Mechanical Engineering (ME) team, and Advanced Prototype Center (APC) to develop CAD models from rough concepts to final Class-A Industrial Design Master Models.
- Act as a liaison between the ID and ME teams, ensuring that all ID requirements are captured and resolving ME issues during product development.
- Understand and support Mechanical Engineering, Tooling, and Manufacturing requirements while maintaining ID intent through production.
- Provide CAD data to the APC to support the development of physical prototype models.
Qualifications
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field OR equivalent experience (5+ years) in these fields.
- 3+ years of experience in developing Class-A Surface models, preferably using Autodesk Alias or ICEM Surf software.
- 2+ years of experience building parametric CAD models using software such as PTC Creo, Siemens NX, SolidWorks, or Catia. Experience with PDM systems (Windchill, Teamcenter, etc.) is required.
- Advanced understanding of Class-A Surfacing techniques and terminology.
Preferred Skills (Not Mandatory)
- Experience with rapid prototyping processes (3D Printing, CNC, etc.).
- Familiarity with subdivision modeling software (Blender, Rhino, Creo, Alias, etc.).
- Experience with rendering for product visualization using Keyshot or Blender.
- Programming experience (Python, Grasshopper, Dynamo).
- Experience with large-scale CAD data management.
- Previous teaching experience in a classroom setting or one-on-one.
- Technical knowledge of mechanical engineering, tooling, and manufacturing of consumer products.
- Strong organizational skills, particularly in managing CAD data for multiple design development paths.
