Hi, I am a solar panel & battery installer in Perth & Peel area in western australia approved by CEC, NETCC, NECA.
A few practical things I pass on to every customer:
1. Rinse the glass on a cool morning once or twice a year. Perth dust, coastal salt and bird mess pile up over the dry months, and a soft hose is all you need - a pressure washer can break seals.
2. Open the inverter app monthly and compare yesterday with the day before. A sudden dip usually points to shade, a tripped isolator or a dirty panel rather than a failing unit.
3. Move the dishwasher, laundry and pool pump into the middle of the day. Self-using your own generation beats exporting it, because the feed-in credit is always smaller than what you pay to buy the power back.
4. Size a battery around your evening routine, not the biggest kilowatt-hour figure on the sticker. Look at what you actually run between sunset and bedtime, then match the storage to that.
5. Check current WA rebates and the feed-in tariff before you sign anything. Both move around, and they can swing the payback on a battery by years.
6. North gives the steadiest all-day yield in Perth, while a west-facing half helps if you cook or run the air-con late. Split arrays are often the best compromise.
7. Keep branches trimmed back. Even light shade on one panel can hold back the whole string unless optimisers or micro-inverters are fitted.
8. Hang on to your warranty documents and book a safety check every few years so loose cabling, isolators and roof penetrations get looked at before they cause trouble.
