Amazon Alexa Brings Live Translation

Live Translation feature aims to assist conversations between different languages.

Recently, Amazon launched Alexa’s new Live Translation feature, which aims to assist with conversations between people speaking different languages by leveraging speech recognition and machine translation technology. Alexa acts as an interpreter and translates both sides of the conversation.

With Live Translation, you can ask Alexa to initiate a translation session for a pair of languages. You can speak phrases or sentences in either language. Alexa will automatically find which language is being spoken and translate each side of the conversation.

Currently,  the Live Translation works for six language pairs, i.e, English and Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian,  or Hindi.

Amazon said that the Live Translation feature leverages existing Amazon systems. It includes Alexa’s automatic-speech-recognition (ASR) system, Alexa’s text-to-speech system, and Amazon Translate, with the overall architecture and machine learning models designed and optimized for conversational-speech translation.
