Anthropic Acquires Stainless to Strengthen AI Agent and Developer Tooling Ecosystem
Anthropic acquires Stainless

Anthropic has officially acquired developer tools startup Stainless, a company widely known for building SDK generation and API tooling used by major AI companies including OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic itself. The announcement was published through Anthropic’s official newsroom.

Stainless specializes in automatically generating software development kits (SDKs), command-line interfaces, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers from API specifications. The platform helps companies maintain developer tooling across multiple programming languages including Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, Kotlin, and Ruby.

According to Anthropic, the acquisition is aimed at improving “developer experience and the connections between agents and external systems,” signaling a deeper focus on AI agents that can reliably interact with tools, APIs, enterprise platforms, and external data sources.

Katelyn Lesse, Head of Platform Engineering at Anthropic, said that agents are only as useful as the systems they can connect to. Anthropic plans to use Stainless technology to improve Claude’s ability to interact with external applications and enterprise workflows.

The acquisition is significant because Stainless already powers developer infrastructure used across the AI ecosystem. Reports suggest the startup’s tooling is behind official SDKs shipped by companies including OpenAI and Google.

Industry observers view the move as part of a broader transition happening in AI development. Modern AI systems are evolving from standalone chatbots into autonomous agents capable of executing workflows, accessing APIs, orchestrating tools, and interacting with enterprise systems in real time.

The acquisition also highlights the growing importance of MCP (Model Context Protocol) infrastructure. MCP servers are increasingly becoming the standard way for AI models and coding agents to connect securely with external applications, databases, cloud platforms, and enterprise tools.

Stainless founder and CEO Alex Rattray stated that Anthropic was one of the earliest adopters of the company’s SDK generation approach. In the official announcement, he said the two companies shared a strong alignment around improving developer workflows and AI integrations.

The deal comes during a period of rapid expansion for Anthropic. Over the past few months, the company has aggressively expanded Claude with enterprise partnerships, coding workflows, finance-focused AI agents, developer tooling, and higher-capability reasoning systems.

Earlier reports from The Information suggested Anthropic was in advanced talks to acquire Stainless for more than $300 million, although official financial terms were not disclosed in the final announcement.

For developers, the acquisition signals something larger happening across the AI industry: developer tooling, API orchestration, and agent connectivity are becoming core infrastructure layers for the next generation of AI applications.
