Anthropic has announced the redeployment of Claude Fable 5, restoring access to one of its most advanced AI models after the U.S. government lifted temporary export restrictions. The move comes less than three weeks after federal regulators ordered the suspension of Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 over national security concerns.
On June 12, Anthropic was forced to abruptly disable both models for all foreign nationals—including some of its own employees—after the U.S. Commerce Department issued an emergency export-control directive. The government cited concerns that a jailbreak technique could potentially bypass model safeguards and enable misuse in cybersecurity-related scenarios.
We’re pleased to share that Claude Fable 5 will be available globally starting Wednesday, July 1, across Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise customers, Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, after which access will move to usage credits. We are also working to restore availability on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry as quickly as possible,” Anthropic said.
According to Anthropic, the company spent the past several weeks working closely with regulators to address those concerns. The company introduced new safety systems, including an improved classifier designed to detect and block the specific jailbreak method that triggered the suspension. Anthropic claims the mitigation system now blocks the exploit with roughly 99% effectiveness.
As part of the agreement, Anthropic will also increase cooperation with U.S. authorities by:
Detecting and reporting malicious model usage
Sharing safety evaluation results for future frontier models
Improving safeguards for high-risk domains
Working with regulators on AI security standards
These commitments helped secure approval for redeployment from the U.S. Commerce Department.
Why Fable 5 Matters
Claude Fable 5 is Anthropic’s first broadly available Mythos-class model, positioned above the company’s Opus models in capability. When it launched earlier this month, Anthropic described it as its most powerful public AI system for:
The model quickly gained attention for frontier-level performance in coding and knowledge work. Anthropic said Fable 5 can handle multi-million-token tasks while maintaining strong reasoning and memory over long sessions.
Anthropic also maintains Claude Mythos 5, a less restricted version with higher cybersecurity capabilities, which remains limited to trusted partners under Project Glasswing.
Bigger Industry Implications
The temporary shutdown of Fable 5 highlighted a major shift in AI regulation: governments are increasingly treating frontier AI models as strategic technologies similar to semiconductors or advanced defense systems.
The incident also signals growing scrutiny around agentic AI systems—models capable of autonomous reasoning, tool use, and long-running execution. As AI capabilities increase, regulators are placing more emphasis on safety, misuse prevention, and national security oversight.
For developers and enterprises, the redeployment of Fable 5 means access to one of the industry’s most capable AI models is returning, but under tighter governance and monitoring.
Anthropic’s message is clear: the future of frontier AI will depend not only on model intelligence, but also on how safely that intelligence can be deployed.
