Mountain View, CA — Google today announced a major upgrade to Video Overviews in NotebookLM, powered by Gemini’s new image generation update, codenamed Nano Banana. The update brings richer visuals, more expressive storytelling styles, and a brand-new “Brief” format — making AI-generated summaries more dynamic and accessible than ever.

“Dense documents can be challenging. NotebookLM helps you understand any sources you upload, and today that process becomes better — and more fun too,” said Eugene Lo, Software Engineer for NotebookLM at Google.

From Text to Dynamic, Illustrated Video Summaries

NotebookLM’s Video Overviews feature already allows users to convert complex notes or source materials into narrated AI videos. The new Nano Banana model takes this further — generating context-aware, visually rich illustrations based on the uploaded sources.

The update introduces six brand-new visual styles for AI-generated content:

Each style is designed to make information more engaging and memorable — turning dense reports, academic research, or business documents into visually compelling, easy-to-grasp multimedia explainers.

Two Formats: Explainer and Brief

Recognizing that users consume information in different ways, Google introduced two viewing modes:

  • Explainer – A structured, detailed video providing a comprehensive breakdown of your source material.

  • Brief – A new, concise format that delivers only the essential highlights for quick understanding.

Users can further customize their videos by selecting a focus area — such as “Analyze only the cost breakdown section” or “Summarize just the methodology and key outcomes.”

Simple Workflow, Smarter Results

To create a new Video Overview:

  1. Select your sources in NotebookLM.

  2. Click the “Video Overview” button.

  3. Use the pencil icon to choose format, visual style, and focus area.

  4. Let Gemini’s Nano Banana model automatically generate the narrated video.

As the video is generated, users can continue exploring other parts of their NotebookLM workspace, streamlining productivity for researchers, educators, and content creators alike.

Empowering Understanding Through AI

The Nano Banana upgrade continues Google’s broader mission of making AI-driven comprehension tools more accessible. By transforming dense documents into intuitive, multimedia learning experiences, NotebookLM aims to help users not just read — but understand and remember complex information.

The new Video Overviews are rolling out this week to Pro users, with full access for all users coming in the next few weeks, across all supported languages.
