Announcing the release on December 23, just in time for Christmas, Linus Torvalds noted: "Let's face it, last week wasn't quite as quiet as I would have hoped for, but there really doesn't seem to be any point to delay 4.20 because everybody is already taking a break."
 
The new version also includes some non-network driver updates and reverts a series of x86 inline asm changes that will not be necessary as a result of upcoming compiler support.
