Meta has announced the creation of the React Foundation, a new independent organization that will oversee the future development of React, React Native, and related technologies such as JSX.
The move formalizes React’s evolution from a Meta-driven open-source project into a community-governed ecosystem. Over the past decade, React has grown far beyond its origins at Meta, with major contributions from developers and organizations around the world.
“React has outgrown the confines of any one company,” the announcement stated. “These changes will enable us to give React ecosystem projects more resources.”
A New Home for React
The React Foundation will serve as the official home for React, React Native, and supporting projects. Its mission is to strengthen the React community by managing core infrastructure, organizing the annual React Conf, and funding ecosystem initiatives.
According to Meta, the foundation will:
Maintain key project assets, including GitHub repositories, CI systems, and trademarks
Support community events and education
Provide grants and financial assistance to open-source projects within the React ecosystem
Seth Webster will lead the foundation as Executive Director. The board of directors will include representatives from its founding corporate members: Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel.

Independent Technical Governance
In parallel, Meta and the React team are introducing a new technical governance model designed to keep the project vendor-neutral. The structure aims to ensure that no single organization—Meta included—has outsized influence over React’s technical direction.
React’s maintainers plan to solicit community feedback as they finalize the new governance process. Details are expected in a forthcoming update.
Why It Matters
The establishment of the React Foundation marks a milestone for one of the web’s most influential technologies. By creating an independent foundation and governance model, React’s leadership hopes to secure the project’s longevity and reinforce its commitment to open, community-led development.
