ChatGPT

SAN FRANCISCO — January 2026 — OpenAI has confirmed that it is testing ads in ChatGPT, marking an early step toward introducing advertising as a potential revenue stream for the popular AI product.

The tests are limited in scope and are designed to help OpenAI understand how advertising might work in an AI-driven conversational environment without compromising user trust. OpenAI emphasized that ads are clearly labeled, separated from AI-generated responses, and do not influence how ChatGPT answers questions.

According to the company, the goal is to explore sustainable ways to support free access to ChatGPT while continuing to invest in research, safety, and infrastructure. Advertising is one of several options OpenAI is evaluating, alongside subscriptions and enterprise offerings.

OpenAI said ads shown in ChatGPT are contextual rather than personalized, and the company reiterated that user conversations are not shared with advertisers. Personal data is not sold, and chat content is not used to target ads, the company said.

The left screen displays “Ads controls” with options for History, Interests, deleting ads data, and toggles for personalizing ads and using past chats and memory. The right screen shows “Ads History,” listing ads viewed today with timestamps and brand names, along with a note that users can clear their history at any time.

The testing phase will focus on understanding user experience, clarity, and trust. OpenAI noted that introducing ads into a conversational interface presents unique challenges compared to traditional web or social platforms, making careful experimentation essential.

The company stressed that no final decisions have been made about broader ad rollout, formats, or long-term strategy. Feedback from users during the testing period will play a key role in shaping next steps.

With the experiment, OpenAI joins a growing number of AI platform providers grappling with how to balance accessibility, sustainability, and user trust as AI tools become part of everyday life.
