OpenAI announced on Tuesday the launch of its Sora app for Android, expanding access to its AI-generated video platform to a broader global audience.
Originally released for Apple devices in September, Sora quickly became one of the most popular AI apps in the world. Within just five days of launch, the app surpassed 1 million downloads and held the top spot on Apple’s App Store for nearly three weeks. It now ranks No. 5 among free iOS apps—just behind Google’s Gemini at No. 4 and OpenAI’s own ChatGPT app at No. 1.
The Android version of Sora is now available on the Google Play Store in the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, with plans to expand into Europe in the near future. The update was confirmed by Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Sora enables users to generate AI-created videos from written prompts, then share their creations through a social feed similar to TikTok. Initially launched as an invite-only app, Sora is now open to all users for a limited time, according to an official post by OpenAI.
The app’s expansion to Android marks another step in OpenAI’s strategy to make creative AI tools accessible across major platforms. With Sora’s growing popularity, OpenAI continues to strengthen its position in the competitive AI media space—alongside other top products like ChatGPT and DALL·E.
